Banking Inquiry Committee update

Professor Bill Black and Mario Nava addressed the Oireachtas Banking Inquiry on Thursday, 5th February 2015 as part of its public hearings.

Bill Black, who is Associate Professor of Law and Economics at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, addressed the Committee on banking policy, systems and practices.

Mario Nava is Director for Regulation and Supervision of Financial Institutions, Directorate General for Financial Stability, Financial Services and the Capital Markets Union at the European Commission. He provided the European Commission’s perspective on the fitness of the European Union regulatory framework for banks and the supervisory policies, systems and practices in the run-up to the financial crisis, the lessons learned and improvements made in the last few years.

The Committee also met on Wednesday 4th February and agreed to accept the assistance of Central Bank Governor Patrick Honohan to explore and develop how the European Central Bank could help the inquiry with its work.

Among the other issues dealt with in the meeting were:

• The Committee resumed consideration of the draft schedule of meetings and witnesses and received an update on the meeting schedule and forthcoming meetings. An update will be posted on the Inquiry Schedule on www.oireachtas.ie/bankinginquiry

• The Committee was updated on correspondence with institutions from which it is seeking documents and other material to assist its work and was informed that there was a high level of co-operation to date.

• The Committee continued preparations for forthcoming meetings and also received technical briefings on the substance of those meetings.

• A Communications Protocol between Investigators and Information providers.

• Information Management Protocol relating to information received from the Central Bank.
