Oireachtas Banking Inquiry Committee agrees witness protocol for Nexus Phase of Inquiry

19/02/2015

The Oireachtas Banking Inquiry today agreed a protocol for bringing witnesses before the Committee for the Nexus Phase of the Inquiry.

The Nexus Phase, when the Committee will engage with institutions and individuals who had roles during the crisis, will focus on three broad elements — Banking Systems & Practices; Regulatory and Supervisory Systems & Practices; and Crisis management systems and policy responses — and how these three elements interacted with each other.

Chairman Ciaran Lynch TD: “Today the Committee agreed and signed off on a witness protocol for the Nexus Phase of hearings which are scheduled to start on 22nd April, with a total of 64 public hearings planned until September. It is envisaged that around 50 witnesses will be called to the public hearings.

“This phase of our hearings will have an Increased reliance on compellability and evidence. The Committee will engage with institutions and individuals who had roles during the crisis and will concentrate on the responsibilities and decisions of the witnesses called.

“There will be a structured witness engagement. Witnesses will be listed and notified in tranches. This will include the name, role, tenure, line of inquiry and proposed date for the hearing.

“The Committee was also updated on the ongoing consideration of opportunities to engage with the European Central Bank.”
