Banking Inquiry to hear from Julien Mercille, Harry Browne, Tim Vaughan and Tom Murphy

24/03/2015

The Oireachtas Banking Inquiry will commence the media module as part of its context hearings tomorrow, Wednesday, 25th March when it will hear from UCD’s Dr Julien Mercille, DIT’s Harry Browne, Tim Vaughan, editor of the Irish Examiner and Tom Murphy, chief executive of the Irish Examiner.

The schedule for the hearings is:

Wednesday 25th March 2015

9.30am – Dr Julien Mercille (UCD)

11.45am – Harry Browne (DIT)

2.30pm – Irish Examiner
Tim Vaughan – Editor
Tom Murphy – CEO

Chairman Ciaran Lynch TD: “Tomorrow we start context phase hearings on the role of the media during the property boom in the lead-in to the banking crisis and any changes in approach after the crisis. In particular, we will consider the role in mainstream media for scepticism about the sustainability of the housing boom or the strength of the broader economy; potential conflicts of interest among media organisations; the promotion of property ownership over other forms of tenure; and the prevailing view that there would be a soft landing.

“We will first hear from academics Julian Mercille and Harry Browne. Julien Mercille is lecturer at University College Dublin and the author of the book The Role of the Media in the European Economic Crisis: The Case of Ireland. Harry Browne is a lecturer in the School of Media, Dublin Institute of Technology. The Committee will also hear from Tim Vaughan, Editor of the Irish Examiner and Tom Murphy, chief executive of the Irish Examiner.”
