Oireachtas Banking Inquiry to hear from Dr Peter Bacon and Prof Alan Ahearne

The Oireachtas Banking Inquiry will hear from Dr Peter Bacon and Professor Alan Ahearne when it continues its hearings as part of the context phase tomorrow, Wednesday 4th March 2015.

Chairman Ciaran Lynch TD: “Dr Peter Bacon is the economist credited with designing the National Assets Management Agency. Since September 1994 he has built and developed an economic consultancy practice. During his career he has held a wide range of positions both in Ireland and overseas and has worked in the public and private sectors in Ireland, His main areas of interest are with macro-economic and financial policy issues and evaluations of policies and projects at sector level. Dr Bacon will address the Committee on the ‘Bacon reports’ on the housing market in Ireland, and the development of the proposal to establish NAMA

“Alan Ahearne is Professor and Head of Economics at the National University of Ireland, Galway. Before joining NUI Galway, Alan Ahearne was senior economist at the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, where he worked for seven years. He also worked as a special advisor to the late Finance Minister Brian Lenihan for two years from 2009 and 2011. He is also external advisor to the Strategy, Practice and Review Department of the International Monetary Fund. He is a member of the board of the Central Bank of Ireland and he is also a member of the Central Bank’s Audit and Risk Committees. Professor Ahearne will discuss issues relating to early warnings, divergent and contrarian views in the context of the Banking Crisis in Ireland.”

The hearing with Dr Peter Bacon starts at 9.30am in Committee 1, Leinster House. The meeting with Professor Alan Ahearne will take place at 11.45am.
