Professor Karl Whelan and FTI to provide expert support to Oireachtas Banking Inquiry Committee

Professor Karl Whelan in conjunction with business advisory group FTI Consulting has been selected to provide expert support to the Oireachtas Banking Inquiry Committee for the context phase of the inquiry.

Chairman Ciaran Lynch TD: “We are delighted to have the services of FTI in association with UCD Professor of Economics Karl Whelan and we look forward to working with them as they provide professional knowledge and expertise to the Committee in the context phase of the inquiry which will frame the broad context for the inquiry and prepare the ground for further public hearings later in 2015.”

The Context Phase will consist of technical briefings for the Committee in areas such as bank lending and liquidity management, mortgage exposures, and the nature, cost and scope of the guarantee decision. There will be public hearings with relevant witnesses for the purpose of information-gathering to inform the Nexus Phase of the Inquiry which will focus on three broad elements:

•    Banking Systems & Practices,
•    Regulatory and Supervisory Systems & Practices, and
•    Crisis management systems and policy responses.

Background on Professor Karl Whelan and FTI

An open tendering process was conducted to procure the necessary expert support for the Context Phase. FTI in association with Professor Karl Whelan have been selected to provide expert support to the Oireachtas Banking Inquiry Committee for the context phase of the inquiry.

Karl Whelan is professor of Economics at University College Dublin. Before joining UCD, he worked as an economist at the Central Bank of Ireland and before that the Federal Reserve Board. His CV can be accessed here: http://www.karlwhelan.com/cv_web.pdf
